Apple Stock Rises Dramatically Following Carl Icahn’s Twitter Endorsement

What Happened Today (in Apple)

Apple stock (AAPL) was trading at $475.77 mid-afternoon after 2 pm. At 2:12 pm, Carl Icahn’s twitter account announced, “We currently have a large position in APPLE. We believe the company to be extremely undervalued. Spoke to Tim Cook today. More to come.”

He then followed up at 2:25 pm that he “Had a nice conversation with Tim Cook today. Discussed my opinion that a larger buyback should be done now. We plan to speak again shortly.”

The stock then rose to a high of $494.66 before settling at the close at $489.57. This is an increase of $18.63, or about 4% higher from its opening price of $470.94. As Philip Elmer-DeWitt of CNNMoney’s blog Apple 2.0 reports, that’s roughly a $17 billion gain in market value in about an hour. Apple also verified that Carl Icahn had been in touch with them, saying “We appreciate the interest and investment…

Dinner and Weekend at my Sister’s Place

Image

My sister and her boyfriend just moved into a double family house in Waltham, MA. Now if any of you reading know about Waltham, she lives on a street right off of a popular bar and restaurant street called Moody St. When I was invited to dinner this past Friday I could not say no there were just so many options for me to pick from. Also, seeing as she’s the one with the job maybe she will pay for me…wishful thinking. So work ended and I headed over to her place. Just for a quick FYI she lives on the bottom floor of a two floor house, at least I had somewhere to park for free though.

So when I get there I see how she either cleaned up her place completely for my arrival, or has just matured and turned into a neat freak. I can’t decide which one it is but my sister already has a room where there’s a chance to break “nice stuff.” She is only one year older so of course I still give her a hard time. We had a reservation at 6 that night at a place called Habaneros which is a Mexican restaurant and a tequila bar. There were a couple of hours in between the time I got there and the time our reservation was so we poured a couple glasses of wine and caught up. Her boyfriend actually just got a job this past winter and starting training which is in Utah and goes there every other week for 5 or so days. Obviously whenever he is gone my sister wants somebody to hangout with since she does not like living alone.  It’s usually my Mother but I guess this time I was good enough to make the cut for dinner.

My sister is really enjoying the “real world” part of life. Although it was tough for her at first she is really adapting well into the working world and living alone. I never thought she would make it but hey I like to challenge her. She has a great job and may have a promotion coming up.

At dinner, I of course got a burrito, always trying to find that burrito that beats my signature chipotle one. Still waiting. She got a healthy salad that I had no clue was even on the menu but that’s what she does. Whenever I’ve gone out with my sister after turning 21 we vouched to drink at least one drink at every dinner…yet again wishful drinking. But the margaritas were awesome. Dinner was ending and we called over the tab, I decided to be a good brother and take the tab since she was nice enough to have me at her place for the weekend.

On the next day we just vegged out and watch some weird shows that I will never admit to watching with anyone but a public blog, these included Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Cake Boss (which is awesome by the way), and the Bachelor. I did not mind as much as I thought watching these shows just because I was spending time with my sister and it’s a sort of thing for us that’s hard to come by these days because she lives away from us.

Needless to say I completely enjoyed my weekend with Christie, she showed me how she was doing and I even grew a little optimistic. Only because if she can make it, so can I!

Nantucket Was a Blast

So, went to ACK on a weekend trip while my family is there for a two weeks. This photo was from the slow ride ferry over with all the cars. The difference between the slow ferry and the fast ferry is two hours, we happened to be on a 2 hour and 45 minute ferry ride after about 3 hours worth of a car ride through stop no go traffic. Needless to say we were almost there but it was getting late. The group, only 5 of us are pictured here but the group had 8 people, decided to get some card games going while on the boat to kill some time. Again that led to drinking on the ferry before we even arrived at our destination. Played hearts, BS, Kings, Ahole, you name it we probably attempted to play it. It was too bad we ran out of alcohol on the way to the island but at that point we were almost there. Upon arrival, we were greeted by my parents and a friends parents who immediately took the keys from us and drove us to the house we were renting (great idea!). Five minutes into the car ride to the house, each member of the group was napping. Once the nap ended and everyone entered the house, we started getting ready for the night out, we planned to go into town and to the bars on our first night. That plan started to deteriorate once we began drinking with the older crowd who had old college friends around with them. Nobody made it to the bar and everyone had a great time, seeing as there were about 20 people total in the house that night.

The next day, very sluggishly woke up at 9 in the morning to the smell of bacon. I was the last one downstairs and the last to eat breakfast. After breakfast we decided on the beach which we got lost going to. In the midst of getting lost, we found a great four wheeling trail which we were driving on for about an hour before we accidentally found the beach. The beach day was even more drinking and even more games such as corn hole and kanjam. After the first few hours on the beach people tend to forget to reapply sunscreen such as myself. Got home around six and was burnt like a lobster, and tired.

This night we actually made it out to the bars and had a great time with the whole crew. We went to a place right in the middle of town called Straight Wharf where a lot of college aged kids and grown ups went. It was a great time and it was a great way to end a quick get away from work for a few days. Cannot wait to go back next year and have some more eventful times hopefully some fishing.

Sebago Lake 7/12 – 7/14

ImageAfter a long week of work, a few buddies and I decided it would be a good idea to head up to Sebago Lake in Maine. We left on Friday after work at about 5:30 p.m and arrived at 9:00 p.m with one friend arriving at 1:30 a.m. Now before I get started telling this story, the place we stayed in Maine was on a remote island in the lake without any electricity. The whole island was a group of family members and the younger generation was all about the same age as I was. There were 5 houses on the island and each had it’s own distinct qualities. Needless to say, there is no Wi-Fi out there. Well that Saturday was packed with eventful activities, we started at about 10 in the morning going up the Songo River through the locks and into Brandy Pond where we ate lunch and had a couple beers. On our way back down the river and entering into Sebago Lake, we stopped by Frye’s Leap which is a rock off of Frye’s Island (another island, this one has streets however). The jump is about 50-60 ft high and one of my friends who was scared of heights kept the boat in neutral for us. We hiked up to the top which takes a couple of minutes and before you know it you are being forced to jump. The fall was definitely freeing as everybody was getting tired, it was a much need pick-me-up. The boat crew got back to the cottages on the island at around 4 in the afternoon and we had a big dinner of steak and chicken, and obviously more beer. Almost immediately after dinner somebody from the crowd said who wants to go tubing, now this I have actually never done before although I have done wake-boarding and water-skiing. A little nervous and hesitant but who could say no, I was of the first three to hop on the tubes and the boat just started going. It did not seem that hard at all until I went out of the wake and the two other guys started kicking my tube, as you can see from the photo above, I was the first to fall. It did not hurt as much as I though but it was a blast, I went 4 more times that night. That night ended with each of us going to a bar and having fun together with Kareoke, and let me tell you, none of us can sing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The weekend concluded with a long drive back and the whole ride was full of stories. Looking forward to next weekend where I am staying with my sister in her apartment in Waltham.
